My Speech I did for My Dad at His Funeral

On a construction site in Honolulu, when the lunch bell whistle blew all the workers would sit down together to eat. And with singular regularity Kimo would open his lunch pail and start to complain. “Son of a gun!” he cry, “Not peanut butter and jelly sandwiches again. I hate peanut butter and jelly!

Kimo moaned and whined about his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches day after day after day. Weeks passed, and the other workers were getting irritated by his behavior. Finally, another man on the work crew said, fer crissakes, Kimo if you hate peanut butter and jelly so much, why don’t you tell your old lady to make you something different.

What do you mean ol’ lady? Kimo replied. I’m not married, I make my own sandwiches.

We all make our own sandwiches.

There is no one to control our lives but ourselves for those of you who wish you could have done something different to change the course of what has already passed. Please don’t destroy yourself over this because we as a family our dealing with it ourselves. What if we did this, or that, however, we did everything we could and more. This was the choice my dad made. It wasn’t the best choice but his choice alone.

Abe Lincoln once said that if he had six hours to chop down a tree, he would spend the first five hours sharpening his axe. We need to spend more time on our journey then our destination. To many times we look at the goal with out looking at the road.

Now I am a man that stands behind no church or religion, however I tell you that I’m a spiritual person and I do believe in the highest good. So with that

The sun will rise and the sun will set, the world will turn and our lives will go on. The choices we make are all our own. We look up to the lord and hold out our hand in hopes that Jesus will guide us to the light. Our hearts in the right place as our mind is in synch with our hearts. Nothing matters but righteous and goodness for mankind. We may never understand situations like these and we can only right ourselves. Life is not a straight line but a wavy line that can go up and down, circle left, circle right as long as our lives are pointing in the right direction, our lives will be guided in the right. Its all about our destination, however if you forget about the journey our lives are meaningless. You can’t look at the finish line without looking down and finding your first step. Change is inevitable and when we accept change the weight of burden leaves us. Finding peace within our selves we will be able to find peace in others. It’s not about reason but understanding one another. Leave pride and ego at home its all about understanding. Understanding one an other. We may not agree, but we can agree to disagree and we can understand each other. Life is not about winning or losing it’s about balance. Balancing our lives to be in sync with our souls

In a village deep in the jungle there lived a boy about 16 years old, that had no concept of technology but could read. One day he found a book, a driver’s manual. He learned it and memorized it. He has never seen a vehicle.

In a farmers yard a young boy about 16 years old helps his father in the farm. With no education he is able to drive the truck up and down the farm to help his father gather all the crops. He has never learned to read or even seen the driver’s manual

Now one day these 2 boys are at my home and I have to get to the store. Who do I trust my life with, the boy who memorized the manual or the boy who drives the truck everyday?

Sometimes we put our lives in the wrong hands. For my dad it was the devil disguised as his misunderstanding of the world around him. Don’t get it twisted the devil is as sneaky as it can be. It was not his fault that he did not understand the plan and he did not welcome change in his life. This is not part of the plan, and don’t let any one tell you otherwise. Taking your own life is never part of the plan. Let go of pride and honor and seek help if taking your life crosses your mind. If you believe there is a god and a Jesus, you must accept that there is evil. You don’t need to say you welcome it to your life but you must understand its there. To many people these days say evil is there but its not, because everything has a purpose slash plan. How can you tell us family that my dad was put on here to bring life then take his own? It was not part of the plan, but like bamboo we eventually right ourselves. Evil is here like god is here. Hence why you see the chaos in the word, people stealing, people slandering, people killing and people even taking there own lives. Don’t get it twisted the devil will go church with you. Just look around the church one day, and see the people who sin during the week. It doesn’t make them bad people and it sure doesn’t make them good people; however we must understand that there is evil out there and we must not welcome it into our lives. The greatest trick the devil ever played was making us believe he never existed. My dad is gone, not because god said this is the path. And if you tell me otherwise and this was part of the plan, I will slap you in your face and say don’t get mad, that was part of the plan.

Our dad is a good surfer, he is a good farmer, he is a good fisherman, he is a good dad, he is a good man. In our lives we can be known at being good at something. We can be known as a good surfer like my dad or a good fisherman or a good farmer or a good mechanic or a good chef like my brothers or a good mom like my mom or you can also be known as a good person.

If I do something good today, people will say “Rex did something good today.” I do good again the next day and they will say “wow Rex is something else he did another good thing.” If this continues on day after day, people will say “wow Rex is a good man.” If anything when I die I would like to be known as a good man, like my dad. Not a good bodyboarder, not a good systems engineer, not even a good lover. Nothing else matters. I’ll take off my shirt in order to keep you warm. You ask for some vegetables I’ll fill up my truck and drop off extra. You fall I’ll pick you up, you hungry I’ll bring you food and for your friends. What matters most is being a good person.

Before you can see the light, you have to deal with the darkness. Many people have a hard time dealing with the darkness, but I tell you there is light in the tunnel you just need to strive ahead. Baby steps are still steps in the right direction.

I like to think of us Moribes as a pond. The Moribe pond and yes the pond gets ripples from stones that are dropped into our pond. From obstacles to family drama, we deal with the ripples and life goes on. But this stone right now is more like a 1 ton boulder that rocked our pond. Now we have all our friends and family ridding the wave with us. And we all thank you for this. This is what gets us through the day.

But there will be a day when the pond is still and the riders have left our pond to clean there own ponds, however we Moribes will have to learn how to live with this 1-ton boulder that is in our pond. And this will be the hard-times, the tuff times. So I welcome all of you to once in a while come swimming in our pond when the pond is still again and no one is around, because this will get us through a life time.

On Molokai there was a student, Dan and a teacher Mama Chia walking along the beach. As they walked Dan stopped mid step and was awestruck by this massive marine graveyard of starfish. Now confronted by thousands of dying creatures washing up on the beach, he felt numb and helpless.

Mama Chia, however with out missing a single limping step, walked over to a nearby starfish, bent over, picked it up, walked to the waters edge and placed it in the water. She then walked back and picked up another little starfish, and returned the starfish to the sea.

Completely overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of starfish, Dan said “Mama Chia, there are so many, how can what you’re doing make any difference?”

She looked up at Dan for a moment as she lowered another starfish into the sea “It makes a difference to this one” she replied

As we see the world taking a spiraling twirl of recession, depression. We see more unemployed, more homeless, more sick, more people on drugs and this may discouraged us from helping. However when a man is down on his knees begging for help, please don’t turn you back but offer a helping hand. We as a family tried to force my dad into therapy however like a samurai he refused any outside help. So I ask you all that if a man is in need, hold out your hand and help. Yes the lord is strong but like the saying goes in the Middle East. “Trust God but, you know, tie up your camel.” Meaning put faith in the lord, but you still need to tie up your camel, or lock your car, or fix your family or even fix yourself.

Now it s time for change, things in our family need to be changed. Communication must be changed, the man of the house must be changed. However I tell you this, my dad, as quiet as he is, he will never ever be replaced. He is my dad, he is my blood, he is my love, and he is forever my guidance to being a good person. Thank you dad for placing food on our table, thank you dad for teaching us how to fish, thank you dad for letting all our friends stay over, and thank you dad for sharing laughs with us . I love you forever and I pray for you forever. I ask you all to pray for my dad, not from repetition but from the heart that my dad gets a chance for the everlasting light. We need to pray that the lord forgives him for his confusion and frustration with the world that surrounded him. Happiness is not seeked but attained by understanding. Do me a favor and every morning thank god for the things you have not by the things you don’t have. And trust me your day will be that much better, because we get too greedy these days thinking we don’t have enough when we have well too much. Being thankful for the things we have is much better then be hateful for the things we don’t have.

The last time I saw my dad was in late July of this year. I spent a couple of days here on Kauai with my friend and watched boots get married. An early flight back to Oahu, we packed and jumped into our rental car and drove to the airport. Half way to the airport I realized I didn’t have my glasses, right at that moment my mom called and said that my dad was on his way to the airport to drop my glasses off. In shock I got mad because I didn’t want my dad to drive just to drop off my glasses, however as a good-hearted-stubborn man he still drove to the airport. By the time we dropped off the car he was right there with my glasses. I quickly grabbed them and he said he loved me; I thanked him and ran to the catch the plane. That was the last time I saw my dad.

Sept 17, 2008. I went to a bar near my home to watch guy Cruz play music. To my surprise guy, john, Ernie, and daughter Cruz was there. It was one of the most amazing nights to watch music at my local spot. I think I was the youngest one there partying with all the old timers and talking about the good old days of music. I thought to myself wow this a great birthday present for myself.

4 in morning on the 18th, my mom called with the tragic news. I mourned that morning and in shock I decided not to go home to Kauai on my birthday and instead I drove to the north shore to clear my head. I looked around the house for my glasses and couldn’t find it, I thought to myself that it would turn up. That night when I packed my things to go home the next day, I turned everything upside down and called the bar to see if they had my glasses. I lost my glasses and this time my dad wasn’t there to find it and give it back to me.

You may never understand my dad like we did. He was a man with few words. My dad was there to straighten us up and my mom is…Supermom. My dad taught us how to fish in his own way, which was one way. If you know my dad, you know what I mean. One of my favorite memories of my dad was when I was very young. I can’t remember when it was. But it probably was when I was about 8 years old on my dads boat. I went fishing with him and we were trolling for ahi. My dad caught an ahi and he reeled it in and gaffed the fish. He told me to help him pull it in, so I pulled the gaff all 40 pounds of me to hold this 100 plus fish onto the boat. We got stuck mid way and my dad needed another gaft to catch a grip to the fish and he said Rex hold on while I grab the other gaff and before I could say no, my dad let go of the gaff and the gaff slipped out of my hand. And we lost the gaff and the 100 plus ahi. I quickly thought to myself that my dad would be mad at me for letting go of the fish and gaff, but instead he said I guess we got to catch one more. The more I thought about it he had the faith that his 40 pound son could hold this 100 plus fish up. This is my dad, the faith in his sons. That day we caught 3 ahi’s, 100 plus pounds. I was really happy to redeem myself and prove that I could hang with my dad. I will never forget this day, since this is the day my dad put faith into me.

I told my dad I loved him once. He tried to kill himself for the 2nd time and I told him over the phone that I loved him. Now for a Moribe to drop an L-bomb within the family is harder then saying I hate you. The first time I said I love you was to my first girlfriend at 18. This was our lives, the lives of a warrior of a samurai. Show no weakness and that included love. But I am happy that I told my dad I loved him, it took 27 years to tell him this but at least I told him once. Now I’m 28 and 9 days old I like to say in front of everyone that I love my mom. I never told my mom I loved her. It took something tragic to change the course of our lives; however change is for the better. So yes after 28 years and 9 days, I love you mom, I love you with all my heart. No one will stand between us. And yes for the 2nd time I love you dad. I always loved you. I always loved you but I showed you in a samurai way, by showing you. I did well in school, I surfed well, I got a great job that was my way of showing that I loved and honored my family. You would never think this would happen to you but it has happen to us, and I hope that no one else has to go through this. He left behind 3 handsome sons, one which is still single and a beautiful wife that many thought was his daughter because she looked so young. We all honor you dad in everything we do.

So my last story is this

A mother brought her young son to Gandhi, she begged, “Please Gandi. Tell my son to stop eating sugar. Gandhi paused, then said “bring your son back in two weeks” puzzled, the woman thanked him and said that she would do as he had asked

Two week later, she returned with her son. Gandhi looked the youngster in the eye and said “stop eating sugar”

Grateful but bewildered, the woman asked “why did you tell me to bring him back in two weeks? You could have told him the same thing 2 weeks ago”

Gandhi replied “two weeks ago, I was eating sugar”

I am not Gandhi, I am not perfect and I cannot tell you what to do or how to think, however I still ask everyone to try to be a good person. And if you can be a good person, you will be remembered well, like my dad. If we can learn anything from this, it’s that taking your life is never an option. Mental illness these days are not looked upon seriously and suicide is usually brushed under the bed. But please take these things seriously since this could happen to any family.

As the days pass, we are hearing more stories of other people who were thinking about taking there own lives. However, now that they see our family in pain, they say that they will never think about taking there own lives again.

The loss of my dad has already changed the course for 3 other people. Even though he took his life, he has saved 3 and I hope and pray god will one day forgive him, because as a family we already have. We don’t forgive him, we honor him. We honor you dad.

Great Spirit, Called by many names, we ask to be placed in the light. We ask for your protection for this soul, Wesley Hiroshi Moribe. In the name of the one, and with that authority, we ask that any and all evil be cut off and removed from him, sealed in its own light and returned to it source. We ask that whatever may come be for his highest good. May thy will be done. Amen

So 3 days ago I put out roach traps to kill those dam small and big roach's in my home. Now I don't have a million roaches but it just takes one, to make your house look gross. So I taught I try and kill them. So I put out one of those bait traps that they eat and take back home to kill everyone else and I also bought the one they go in and just stick to the trap. Basically a F-U to you, roach. So after the first night I checked the trap and sure enough I got this little guy, chilling in the trap. I'm really stoked so I put the trap back and check it daily. So after 3 days I check the trap and its the same guy in there, so I shake the thing to make sure no one else is in there and that dam roach moves. 3 DAYS with no food, stuck to the ground its still chilling. DAM those roaches. I just want you to die :D I swear they are unstoppable. If we could train those roaches to fight our war I think we would win :D

Nope, I really want to check this place out. Honestly how many people do you know visited this place? Probably no one, hence Dream Vacation. So why is my name on the heat twice. Its because not only was I surfing against the other guys, but also myself. And myself beat myself. Over analyzing waves, Over analyzing ever section just lead to ever failure in my head and on the wave. I mean don't get me wrong the other guys surfed really well, however my head wasn't right.

So as result for future reference and for other people who may feel the butterflies hitting your tummmy. Don't do anything different you would do the night before. Eat what you like, surf how you want. And if all else fails, drink a cold one and poof be gone. Next year I plan to surf 100% better :D

Congrats to all the Kauai boys for taking every division besides the girls, and mahalo's to the romero's and maui boys for taking me surfing the whole week.

Rollo Take-Off 101

History
I forget when I seen the first rollo take off, it could have easily been in Blast Off Phase 3 or one of Tom Boyles old school videos; which till this day I love. Ever since then I have fallen in love with this old school move. (I'm hoping not to offend any of the old timers, but I'm feeling old myself these days.) However for all the youngsters out there, and looking for some different perspectives and a different adrenaline rush, I recommend the old school rollo take off. I only say old school, because I seen it done a lot back in the day, and now days I don't see many attempting it.

Preliminary Work
I remember thinking "First things first, learn how to do an Air Rollo, and then Rollo take off" and in this case and for future reference please learn how to do an air rollo before attempting a roll take off in shallow shore break. If anything my advice would be that you are so comfortable with an air rollo, that you can do it "on-demand." This means the same as your tv, if you want it, you got it. When you want to do an air rollo, it comes naturally and comfortably and on-demand. Most pro's and competitive riders know what this is all about. If you ever seen a contest in poor conditions and riders still seem to find a way to do an air rollo or even ARS, this is what I mean by on-demand.

Wave Selection
With any maneuver, wave selection is crucial. Rollo Take off's are best performed on steep vertical waves, in this case shore breaks are the best. The more steep and vertical the wave is, the better. If 90% of the waves are barreling at the break, this would be prime to try your luck at the rollo take-off. I have chanced my luck at reef breaks and luckily gotten away alive, however I would suggest somewhere safe and soft. When selecting a wave to roll take-off, you will be close to the impact zone, if not you will be directly in it. For me what usually happens is I'm paddling out from the last wave I caught or I'm in the zone strategically.

Timing
Timing is key. Timing the wave is probably going to be one of the hardest parts in learning to roll take off. There are a couple of things that could happen, either you roll too early and end up in the lip and getting thrown over the falls. Or you roll too late and end up getting creamed the same way. Either way, you usually end up going over the falls and in worse case scenarios going head first into the sand or reef. Usually the roll happens at the last mili-seconds of the wave throwing over. Going it over and over in my head I can't come up with a real way to time it, because every break and wave is different. This timing needs to be learned by trial and error.

Positioning
Position your body like you are already riding the wave however your body is pointing a tad more to the ocean and less to the beach. This way you will have more control over your body and board when getting thrown over. You have NO speed, but the wave movement itself, so positioning your body is crucial. In the first shots, you can kind of tell my body didn't start 100% horizontal but in a slight angle.

Speed
None. You have to project some speed with your fins to get into the face of the wave.

The Beginning
You got the rollo on-demand, your positing and timing feels right, and your in the impact zone. You start your take-off. Kick off one time to get some speed up the face of the wave, the wave will then immediately pick you up. I have to stress that this may feel real awkward if not scary. This part is going to sound like an oxymoron or even a paradox; however I'll try my best at explaining this. Let your body go like a rag doll, however keep your upper body stable and your arms tight to stabilize your board. The only other explanation is being relaxed but at the same time stable and stern in your positioning. Use your legs and fins to stabilize your body from turning over to quickly. Going upside down will feel like an eternity, unlike a regular rollo which happens instantly. For some reason, it just feels like you are upside down longer because you are at the mercy of the wave, gravity and your body. Confidence is going to be a huge factor here, 2 things will happen when upside down. You will either commit to the take off or you will bail and go over the falls. I say commit! I actually have gotten more hurt when bailing. I personally commit to 99% of my take-offs. The only time I will bail, is if I feel like I'm going to hit Beppu. (I feel the MOST comfortable shooting take-offs with Beppu, I tried with other photographers and almost crapped my pants, Its not to take anything away from other photographers, however it's the time you put in with a photographer that makes me comfortable. I'm sure beppu feels the same way when shooting me, trying to do crazy crap like this. But please be careful if your friend tries to shoot you, this can be dangerous since there is no way of you getting out of the way, your head is at the mercy of the photographer. So choose wisely if you start shooting this, me and beppu have put in probably a year of surfing and shooting for this shot)

Upside Down
Now that you are upside down and looking at the sand or either closing you eyes and hoping for the best, your legs are going to play a huge factor here. This is where your legs can get tangled up and destabilize your transition from being upside down to right side up. In the first picture, my left leg acts like an anchor and thrust, I use it to push off and to keep me stable on the wave. My right leg is used to slow me down and keep me from flipping to quickly. Spreading your legs as you probably guess keeps my body from flipping instantly and keeps me locked into the wave. Never bail when upside down, its self explanatory, it's like a bmx or motocross person bailing on a back flip when upside down, it never ends pretty.

The Flip
When you feel its time to flip over use your legs and body at the same time to start. Some will say lead with your head and your body will follow, but luckily for me I can't do a rollo take off on a left to save my life, hence why I have been entranced on what I'm doing wrong on lefts. (Call me Zoolander, excluding the really really ridiculously good looking part) And for one thing I know it doesn't work that way because I have gone over the falls a million times on lefts. When I use only my body, my body gets stuck in the lip or my legs actually get twisted on the flip. So for the flip, start to cross over your legs and at the same time start to flip your body over, be careful not to over rotate, because the wave is throwing you over, so your body will flip naturally. It's just keeping your body stable and slowing down the movement. If you flip too quickly or go to fast, get ready for some extreme washing machine beatings. Try to slow yourself down in order to reduce the amount of impact on the landing.

Landing
If you managed not to get tangled up or get tossed and you even slowed your body down for the landing. The landing may come easier then you expected. Most landings are actually pretty soft, because of the explosion of the lip coming back up. Since you are in the lip and flipped over, the explosion is a counter from the free fall and can act like a pillow when landing. Now remember the whole time your body was relaxed, don't be fouled and tense up your whole body now, instead get ready for any landing and use your board as a spring and try to imagine landing on a pillow, soft and gentle. It's probably the craziest time to even imagining landing soft, however you maybe surprised on the landing if done right. Right as you land, your body may feel like it is going for another rollo take-off, this is when you need to be like a rock and if any case slide out on purpose in order to counter balance the twirl. Once you feel stabile you may lean forward a little and actually project yourself forward. I have ridden waves out of the barrel from rollo take-offs, of course its rare, but it doesn't stop me from trying. Furthermore, the pounding from the wave will turn into a close out barrel, instead of a spiraling twirl of death. Use your own judgment if you want to stick it out and ride the wave.

Time
Keep in mind the total amount of time to do a roll take off will probably be 1 Second, however when completing the move, time will stop. This is why most people do extreme sports, because things happen in milliseconds and every movement and taught process counts.

How to Fall Properly
Like any extreme sport, learning how to fall properly is probably just as important as doing the move itself. Skateboarders know when to bail and how to fall on solid concrete, snowboarders know how to fall on snow, wake boarders know how to fall in the lakes, motocross know how to fall on dirt and so should bodyboarders know how to take a beating. This is probably a whole another 101, however I will stress learning how to bail, when to bail, and how to fall is extremely important. Sometimes I like to paddle out and just get demolished from the biggest wave, just to get an understanding of how to fall and where to fall. However I would never do this at a reef break, only in a shore break.

Like any sport or activity there are probably a dozen different ways to do things, so do your own experimenting and feel free to let me or us know how it turns out. What worked, what didn't, how you got smashed and now you are blaming me. So find what you think would work for you and try it, like LeVar Burton from The Reading Rainbow always said "But you don't have to take my word for it."

Yesterday I got CREAMED at Sandy Beach. Went to the ER to find my brain was fine, however I already had a gash on my shoulder/back/head/leg and a popped ear. However i'm healthy and resting for a couple of weeks.

A bodyboarder negotiated one of the big waves that rolled in yesterday at Sandy Beach.

Chris Johnson was an experienced bodyboarder who tackled big surf.

Chris Johnson learned to drive a stick shift so he could get to Sandy Beach as a Kailua teenager, kissed his girlfriend for the first time there, proposed to her in August under a full moon at Sandys and, last Saturday, died there while bodyboarding.

Johnson's mother, Sandra, worried about the youngest of her three boys perhaps more than other moms. As a nursing manager at Kuakini Medical Center, she knows all too well about the broken necks and twisted backs that Sandys claims.

"That was his love and I knew he wouldn't stop going there," she said yesterday, just before she and her family made arrangements for her son's funeral Saturday night at Community of Christ Church. "I asked him to be extra careful and not take any undue chances. He just said, 'Don't worry, mom.'"

John Clark, who wrote the acclaimed "Beaches of Hawai'i" books series and recently retired as deputy chief of the Honolulu Fire Department, said the fact that Johnson was an experienced waterman, championship bodyboarder and knew his limits in the ocean only underscores how treacherous Sandys can be when O'ahu's South Shore is pounding.

"Whether you're board surfing or bodysurfing there, you really have to know what you're doing," he said. "You really have to be good."

Yesterday, the National Weather Service forecast 4- to 6-foot waves along the South Shore that should last through Monday. So lifeguards at Sandys yesterday planted red flags in the sand and warned beginners to stay out of the water.

Clark worked for two years as a lifeguard at Sandys in the 1970s and saw "a lot of really bad cuts, a lot of dislocations, a lot of limb breaks, like arms and legs. Sandys is so shallow and it's got a steep powerful wave that breaks on very shallow water. At low tide, a lot of times it looks like you're coming down on dry sand."

Seven people drowned at Sandys from 1993 through 2005, according to Dan Galanis, epidemiologist of the state Department of Health's injury prevention and control program. Only one drowning — in 1996 — involved a surfer, Galanis said.

Christian Morris of Kahala and John Felice of Waialua, both surfing instructors and photographers with the Hans Hedemann Surf School, stared into the surf yesterday and considered the dangers of Sandys.

Morris has suffered too many reef and rock scrapes to count. "That happens every time you go out," Morris said. "And I've twisted my back, too. But I don't really think about dying. If it's your passion, you're always going to be in the water."

But Phil Wilson, a taxidermist tourist from Wasilla, Alaska, learned his lesson 10 years ago at Sandys.

He bodyboarded near Waikiki, went looking for more challenging waves and heard about Sandys for the first time.

"The lifeguards said, 'Don't go in.' Like an idiot, I did," Wilson said. "I got pounded in the sand and bloodied both my knees. After that I got out of the water and never went back in."

Johnson, 31, was well aware of his limits, said his family and fiancee, Andrea Esquibel, 25.

While he was happy to jump into 8-foot waves, Johnson would stay out with Esquibel on 12-foot days on the North Shore.

"He would say, 'It's too big. Can't handle,'" Esquibel said.

Johnson grew up in Kailua, a clever kid who liked to play soccer and baseball. But by the time he got to Kalaheo High School, surfing, bodyboarding and the beach had become the focus of his life.

All of the Johnsons — Bud, Sandra, and older brothers Mark and Jeff — loved the beach. But none of them burned for it like Chris.

"He would never get out of the water," Mark said.

After he graduated from Kalaheo in 1993, Bud and Sandra argued with their youngest child about going to college in Colorado — away from the beach lifestyle he loved.

"We wanted to get him into an atmosphere that would hopefully attract him to other things," Bud said. "He didn't want to go to college but our contract was that he agreed to go for two years and after that if he wanted to quit, he'd quit. So after two years, he quit. And he became a snowboard bum."

For the next five years, Johnson worked various jobs like short order cook or installing coaxial cable — while taking surfing vacations to places like Mexico and entering bodyboarding contests at artificial wave parks, which he won.

When he came back home to Kailua, Johnson enrolled at Windward Community College and got various jobs, like delivering pizzas for the 'Aikahi Pizza Hut.

There, Johnson met Esquibel, a cook, and his life started to slowly change.

They eventually moved in together, bought a house in Kane'ohe and three years ago Johnson began to pursue a career in real estate with unusual passion.

Then in August, after dinner, he took Esquibel to Sandy Beach where he had previously buried a plastic red box in the sand. He dug out the box, pulled out a candy blow-pop ring and got down on one knee.

Then he produced a real engagement ring — one that Esquibel and he had seen at Tiffany & Co.

On Saturday, Esquibel was sitting at a Sandys lifeguard stand when someone ran up and told the lifeguards that a bodyboarder was in trouble and had gotten separated from his leash.

Johnson's brother, Mark, said he understood that the accident happened at the Sandys break called Half Point.

But a Honolulu Police Department incident log said Johnson hit his head at Pipe Littles, "a super shallow wave where you take off right in front of this rocky point," Clark said. "If you get caught in the barrel and you don't make it past the rocks, when you wipe out, you're going right onto the rocks."

When she saw Johnson's legs and boardshorts from the back of the ambulance, Esquibel dropped to the ground.

Sandra Johnson said the irony is that her son had found other, more important things beyond life at the beach.

He had originally disagreed with his mother about becoming an organ donor. Only after his death on Saturday did she learn that Johnson, on his own, had quietly changed the donor status on his driver's license on his birthday in June.

"The beach was still important but so were other things all of a sudden," Sandra Johnson said, reaching over and touching Esquibel. "The beach wasn't everything anymore."

EliteXC was great for the first 3 fights. The girls stole the show and then the last 2 main matches felt sooo wrong. If you watch it you know what I mean. Lawler fight was great, but during round 2 both of them were laughing and smiling like they knew what there were doing, some kind of dance for the fight. However the fight was stopped anyway for the eye gauge. Which to me, felt so gay. If it was pride or ufc, they would have never stopped the fight.

Of course the kimbo fight was soooo rigged. The ref stopping the fight, mid-fight? The guy wasn't even KO'd and the ref ran in to stop it. Thats just craziness, if the ref felt that he was getting beaten why didn't they stop the fight when the other guy had kimbo pinned and stomping on his ass.

Any hoot they are saying that kimbo tapped out. And to me, I wouldn't be surprised. WHY DID THEY PAN OUT so far mid fight so we could see the crowd. You NEVER do that. And then of course rodgers calling it like it is.

With just the hype itself of having another Indiana Jones, I wasn't to sure on how to react. Its been years since I seen the old ones, so when they popped back on TV this past week, I had to watch them all again. After diving into the history books I got excited to see the new one. So I stumbled in there today and got 2 of my friends to tag along. I went in there with little to no expectations. I must say I was pretty entertained through out the movie, until that freaking Tarzan scene. I still can't let it go, I mean I can get local tribes, weird artifacts, powers and spirits. But when you start swinging from a vine, you just kill me. With that said, if you want to just be entertained, go see it. For all its worth, its still worth to see Harrison ford kick some major butt.

The other night I met a girl that looked very similar to one of my X-Girlfriends. So automatically there was some attraction, however was it attraction to this new girl or the X. Upon Further review with pictures, I discovered that she barely looked like my X. Maybe just some features in her tan and color. I don't know where I'm going with this, but in the end my X was way cooler then this new chick....She hit the curb with ice cream in hand.

Everyone has once in there lifetime woke up from a long night of drinking in the most awkward positions. For me this morning was one of those moments. Half my body on the couch and the other half holding on for dear life. However in my drunken state I taught wow, even though I have a hang over as massive as the titanic I know my body we be well stretched for the day. As twisted as this sound, you could never sleep in those positions while sober, So I challenge you all that drinks the night away to sleep in some yoga position. Trust me, right now I feel like I can do an Upward-Facing Dog while ralphing out my morning breakfast.

Coffee Or Beer?

Choose your poison. Lately I have been noticing that people are addicted to either 2 things and thats a cup of coffee in the morning or a Beer at night. And chances are, you're consuming both in one day. As for me I choose the cold beer at night. I have managed to steer clear from coffee for this long and plan to stay coffee free, even if Starbucks is a 5 minute walk away from my house.

It has always intrigued me how some people can't function with out a cup of coffee in the morning. Ever person knows a person like this if not your probably this person. Sipping your coffee like its the yellow sun for superman or the force for the jedi's or young men for the desperate housewives. You get my point. Furthermore, If there is a AA meeting shouldn't there be a CA meeting? Hello my name is Rex and I'm addicted to Coffee.

So you have two drinks, both million if not billion dollar industries. Choose your poison Coffee or Beer? However wouldn't it be Genius to have a Coffee Beer or a Beer Coffee or a Boffee? I'm such a big fan of beer, I would sell out and drink a Morning Boffee before I headed out to work.

But the million dollar question is do you make your Boffee cold or hot?

Now believe it or not, I never did get baked. What do you mean you never did get baked? thats what I meant, I never did get high off the maui-wooweee or the Jamaican bob sled team. Yea I'll admit I might not be as cool as you think I was. But know this I once got a vegetarian to eat turkey. HA! Or what about the time I taught a turtle how to moon walk?

Any ways back to my point, I watched Enchanted with my nieces this past weekend and I was in tears from the corny humor. One can only imagine getting baked and watching this movie, I think it would be funnier then watching this then Half Baked or Fast times at Ridgemont high. But what do I know?

I do know that this movie points out many flaws in a everyday person. Always worrying, Always stressing, Always Trying to be Happy, Always, etc etc etc. Why can't we all just be like the princess and prince in this movie and sing in the middle of the day? Corny Happy? Talk to Strangers? Smile at a bum?

Because people would think you are mental! Or shooting one of those "No Smoking" commercials. You know that one, "Must have been a Typo, Typo" Guess what they might not be smoking cigarettes but DAM they sure are eating a lot of shrooms!

So everyone is blogging even the hack kid down the street is talking about the new Street Fighter game to the Man Whore who talks about the latest skank he banged the other night. Writing has always intrigued me, ever since the 6th grade when my teacher told me to write a fantasy story. My story was so detailed and so out of context and time that my teacher only could give me an A. I can only remember bits and pieces of it, however it was a story of a young boy who finds a map in a bottle. He follows the map to an underwater world. After that my mind is blank.

Any ways I wanted to start off with a sick first blog, however instead of putting that kind of pressure on myself i decided to write, why write in the first place. Well for one, I have been noticing a ton of people getting jobs from just writing from newspapers to news to magazines and now to the most famous blogger. Diablo Cody, The girl behind the movie "Juno" She was once a Stripper, turned blogger, turned into movie writer. Now if thats not the most beautiful story I don't know what is. I mean Disney should buy the rights to this and make a animation story of her. Imagine watching a cartoon of a stripper turned movie writer, that would be most exciting.

With that I welcome all you new readers and writers to comment/bitch slap/ignore me. I will be blogging from stripper experiences, to ex-girlfriends, to commercials that should be shot, to movies that should be downloaded for free.
